Four remarkable holiday food drives are underway in Santa Cruz County – each contributing in a different way to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry. I encourage each of you to contribute to the program of your choice. Few community problems are as compelling or as easily solved if we work together.
Valley Churches United has assisted thousands of families in the San Lorenzo Valley since 1982 by distributing more than $18 million in aid for food, shelter and the basic necessities of life. With dedicated volunteers carrying on the tremendous work of Annette Marcum, keeping her generosity and spirit alive, Valley Churches United has become an invaluable resource for San Lorenzo Valley residents.
The Grey Bears serves Seniors with healthy meals and volunteer opportunities that enrich the daily lives of thousands of seniors. Perhaps the most remarkable success story about the Grey Bears is the “Seniors Serving Seniors” program and their 38th Annual Holiday Dinner on December 7 at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium.
The Second Harvest Food Bank collects food and donations for 200 Santa Cruz based non-profit and nutrition program partners, including Valley Churches United and the Grey Bears. Second Harvest can provide four healthy meals for every $1 contribution and 95% of all contributions are used to feed people. I am proud that Santa Cruz County employees voluntarily participate each year in the Second Harvest holiday food drive with the goal of contributing 125,000 meals this holiday season.
Please join me in supporting these worthy programs and give generously to ensure that all our neighbors have access to nutritious meals during the holidays and throughout 2015.
